Allocasuarina Verticillata (She Oak)

Commonly known as drooping she-oak, Allocasuarina seedlings will become small trees with a rounded habit, 4 -10m tall, with drooping branchlets of pine like needles. Allocasuarina can be slow growing in comparison with other species, however it is a commonly selected species for coastal regions due to its hardy nature.

It can be grown to form an excellent windbreak, but when planted in frontline coastal areas it is important that seedlings are from seed collected in coastal regions as inland forms of the species are not adapted to salt laden winds. All our Casuarinas are grown from seed sourced on our property, only 600m from the ocean beach.

Allocasuarina fruits are large, cylindrical woody cones containing winged seeds which are an important food source for cockatoos, galahs and parrots. Small birds like to forage for insects within the branchlets.
This species has separate male and female plants. Male plants have yellow-gold flowers while females display red flowers which are displayed during winter.
